Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is shocked and grieved on the killing of three BSF personnel and two police person including an officer in two separate incidents in Anantnag district, which goes to polls on June 22.
Chief Minister has expressed her anguish on the purpose of militants and their sponsors in Pakistan in unleashing terror in Kashmir. Obviously, she rightly says that the purpose is to obstruct Kashmir progressing and strengthening its economy which the rulers in Pakistan and their pawns on the chessboard of Kashmir are determined to do. Pakistan has waged three wars against India to grab Kashmir which it could not. She has waged a proxy war and thinks she will win it. This is a wrong notion pursued by Pakistan, thinks the Chief Minister. She has asked a very simple question. Pakistan claims that it loves the people of Kashmir. Those who claim to love a people do not do acts that result in the killing of innocent men, women and children. She said that fifty to sixty thousand people including security force personnel and the police personnel have been killed in a terror campaign unleashed by Pakistan twenty seven years ago. How can Pakistan expect Kashmiris to accept that Pakistan is their well-wisher? It is for Pakistan to understand whether by what it is doing will win her the favour of Kashmiris or their anger.
The CM’s statement is recognition of the sacrifices our security forces or Para military forces are making to maintain peace and law and order in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The support given to security forces by the Chief Minister in a righteous cause will boost their morale and they will not think that their sacrifices go waste. The Chief Minister has rightly targetted Pakistan for its nefarious role in unlashing mayhem in Kashmir. The Chief Minister made a very important point that by and large people in Kashmir were no more interested in the gun as they wanted development, employment, roads, business, education and civic facilities. She is very right in concluding that the militants and their sponsors from across the border do not like Kashmiris to progress and strengthen their economy. At a time when her Government was trying to expand economy and bring prosperity to wider sections of people and remove their deprivation, unleashing of terror has no purpose other than that of arresting this progress. She hoped that people will not accept the culture of gun that has become their number one enemy.
There is another angle to the attack of the militants. One is that since the Government is inclined to take back the displaced Kashmiri persons to the migrant colonies in the Valley, the attack is meant to create opposition to the Government in this behalf. We have seen that separatists and their supporters are interested in disrupting any scheme of rehabilitation of the displaced persons in the valley. Though there is nothing by the name of retired servicemen colony yet the opposition has begun to create a hue and cry that the Coalition Government is creating Sainik colonies in Kashmir. A canard is being spread only to harass the Government.
It will be noted that both the incidents have taken place in the Anantnag district, where bypoll are due to take place on June 22. The attack on the BSF convoy took place in Bijbehara, the home town of the Chief Minister. Her father had been returned form the same constituency. Election for the vacancy is being held in near future to fill that vacancy and Mehbooba has already filled her nomination papers. Her opponents would want to create hurdles in her way and disrupt the election process if they could. This also might be one of the reasons for the militants to select the place and time of their strike. In any case, the militants and their sponsors across the border are only day dreaming by entertaining futile ideas of disrupting law and order in the State by their gimmicks. Militancy is rejected by the people in Kashmir and the militants are feeling isolated and desperate.
The Chief Minister has referred to two more points in her inaugural speech at Jammu Convention Complex. She said that her Government was determined to take the Kashmir displaced persons back in transit camp colonies and make them stay put there until the time they feel safe to return to their villages. This is a pious idea though of course we know that the chief minister is not unmindful of the opposition that might shape to this idea in one form or the other. The other subject she touched upon was that of bringing Jammu region on the tourist map of the State. She reiterated her Government’s resolve to give impetus to border tourism besides developing other destinations in Jammu region.
