“Today at about 2 pm, Mukesh of Khulra Kingla, Jallandhar, the accomplice of BSF deserter constable Rajeev Ranjan was apprehended and one LMG, 10 magazines and 250 rounds were recovered,” BSF spokesman said, adding that the arrest was made from Nakoder area of Jallandhar in Punjab.
The weapon along with ammunition were taken away by the constable, hailing from Ojhaul of Darbangha district in Bihar, after stabbing his colleague constable Raghubir Singh over a petty issue in Beli Azmat Post of Kanachak sector on Sunday.
Security forces have apprehended Mukesh and Mithun from a residential area of Nakoder Jallandhar while they were waiting for another accomplice, the spokesperson said, adding Mithun was later let off.
He said Ranjan was also in the neighbouring area but managed to escape after sensing police presence.
Police have launched massive hunt for Ranjan, who had secured leave from July 21 to August 9 but didn’t go to his house in Bihar and kept staying in Jammu at a City hotel, reportedly with some family members before he struck at Beli Azmat Post on Sunday morning and stabbed Raghubir Singh of Chadwal, Kathua on duty and snatched LMG, 10 magazines and 250 rounds from him before fleeing from Jammu.
Though there was no official word, security forces were investigating whether Ranjan had links with Naxalites and that he had to give the weapon to them. However, the things would be clear after his arrest, for which massive efforts were on.
