REASI, Oct 28: No matter how improved and advanced the medical science has become, the word “tumour” still brings anxiety and stress in everyone. In fact, tumour is one of the most misdiagnosed aspects.
Such was the case with Sita Devi whom the doctors at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital had recently treated. The multi-disciplinary approach at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital helped the patient from being misdiagnosed. In fact, the team using Intra-Operative Frozen Section helped the patient overcome her anxiety within 2 hours.
57-year-old Sita Devi was leading a normal life until she started suffering from post-menopausal bleeding. Unlike others her bleeding wasn’t stopping, in fact, it was going on for nearly 3 months. This worried her and she consulted a doctor, who in turn did an ultra sound scan. The scan revealed that she was suffering from a complex left ovarian cyst of the size of a pomegranate. The doctor whom she was consulting suspected it to be a cancerous one. The search for an advanced care, bought her to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
She consulted Dr Sheemu Showkat, Consultant Gynaecologist, who did a thorough evaluation. The tests revealed that the patient indeed has a left ovarian mass. Dr Sheemu sought expert opinion from Dr Abhinav Choudhary, Consultant Surgical Oncology and Dr Sonia Nagyal, Consultant Pathologist.
The team felt the best way to approach the case was to do an Intra-Operative Frozen Section. Intra-operative Frozen Section is a method in which a tissue is sent to the lab during the surgery and is seen under the microscope without any fixation or staining to provide an immediate opinion. While traditional method requires 7 days, in this modality the result can be obtained within 30 minutes. The final report also showed that the patient was suffering from strumaovari, a rare type of benign tumor. Today, the patient is not only relived she is leading a normal life.
Elaborating about the case, Dr. Abhinav Choudhary, Consultant S “Diagnosis or identifying the ailment is crucial in medical science, especially for conditions like cancer. It is very important to follow a multi-disciplinary approach. In fact, this case study is a classic example of how a multi-disciplinary collaboration can save lives.”
This case remains as an example of collaborative medical approach and how it can save lives.
