Srinagar, July 15: Government today ordered the postponement of the elections of Srinagar Municipal Corporation after the post of the Mayor was left vacant recently following a no-confidence motion earlier against Junaid Mattoo.
The order issued here by the Principal Secretary Housing and Urban Development Department stated that the Government hereby extends the time limit for the conduct of the said election to three months from the date the office of the Mayor post fell vacant.
The Government, in the order, has put forth the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown as the main reason for not conducting the election-which as per the J&K Municipal Corporation Act–2000 was to be held within one month after the Mayor post fell vacant.
“In view of the proviso of Section 36(2) of J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2020, and in view of the difficulty in the conduct of the election to the post of Mayor, SMC due to health pandemic-COVID-19 and management of protocol related to it issued by the DDMA, Srinagar, the Government hereby extends the time limit for the conduct of the election to three months from the date the office of the Mayor fell vacant,” the order read.
