JAMMU, Sept 10: Prof. Pradeep K Sharma, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu, today inaugurated and operationalised 9 fish ponds at Chatha Campus and added a new dimension of initiating the fish production and its research activities.
The series of fish ponds have been constructed under the PMSG scheme at Chatha campus, which is conducive for such activities as the ground water table is just 1.5 meter below the surface. The fishery activity has been made part of Farming System Research Centre, which was already working on it as a part of Integrated Farming System model.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor informed that Integrated Farming System is right approach for increasing the profitability and livelihood security to the farmers of the Jammu region in which fish farming plays a vital role for boosting the economic activity in the potential areas of the farm land. He hoped that with the induction of these ponds and newly placed manpower of fishery scientists in the FSR, Centre will boost the fishery research in SKUAST-Jammu. He also hoped that the Centre will create an appropriate atmosphere in mitigating the production constraints being faced by the fish farmers besides will take lead in establishing the hatchery unit, for supplying exotic fish seed in near future to the needy farmers.
He underlined that the IFS model designed and validated by the scientists of the centre under the supervision of Dr. Kachroo comprising of crop, Horticulture, dairy, fish cum poultry cum duckery, vermi-compost, Apiary unit, bio gas, mushroom unit and boundary plantation is the need of the hour for the farmers of today, who are facing the problems due to climatic change, as the developed model by this university serves the purpose of realizing the three fold profit from the unit land besides provides the regular income to the small and marginal farmers throughout the year.
Vice Chancellor put the seeds of composite fish farming mainly Catla, Common Carp, Mirgal, Rahu and Grass Carp in these ponds.
