Srinagar, May 16: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura has performed its first infant bone marrow transplant on an eight-month-old child diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening immune disorder, officials said today.

The infant underwent a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) following extensive evaluation and multidisciplinary planning and is being discharged in stable condition, SKIMS officials said.

Doctors described HLH as a severe disorder marked by uncontrolled immune system activation, persistent fever, multiorgan involvement and potentially fatal complications.

They said bone marrow transplant remains the only curative treatment for children affected by the condition.

Director SKIMS Prof. Dr. M. Ashraf Ganie termed the procedure a major milestone in advanced cellular therapy and bone marrow transplantation services in J&K.

He congratulated the Department of Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) for the achievement and reiterated the institute’s commitment to strengthening advanced hematology and transplant care facilities in the region.

Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Hematology and BMT, Dr. Sajad Ahmad Geelani, said the successful transplant reflects the institution’s growing expertise in managing highly complex disorders requiring advanced cellular therapies.

Associate Professor Dr. Reashma Roshan said performing a transplant in such a young infant required exceptional clinical precision, specialised infrastructure and intensive supportive care throughout the treatment process.

Assistant Professor Dr. Afaq Ahmad Khan said the achievement offers new hope to children suffering from rare immunological and hematological disorders and reinforces SKIMS’ commitment to providing state-of-the-art transplant services within the region.

Prof. Ganie also interacted with the child’s family at the time of discharge and congratulated the transplant team for achieving the milestone.

The family expressed gratitude to the doctors and medical staff for their care and support throughout the treatment.
