SRINAGAR, May 29: The unhygienic conditions in a doctor’s hostel at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has endangered the health of about 50 doctors who are living there.
The doctors who are living in the hostel are seeking post graduate doctoral courses in different disciplines in the institute.
Many bathrooms in the hostel are defunct and their fitments like faucets, shower heads and geysers are rusting and there are water leakages. “We send sweepers to the hostel every morning but the fitments used in these bathrooms are of cheap quality and it is difficult to keep them hygienic”, said Sanitation Officer, Abdul Rashid.
According to Chief Warden of the hostels, Dr. Maqbool Lone, the last major repairs in the hostels was carried out in 2012. When asked why the washrooms of the hostel are in such a pathetic condition, the Warden of the hostels, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Khan, said that no doctor residing in the hostel has made such complaint to him yet.
The doctors said that they have never seen any official coming to their hostel for inspection. “We can’t make complaint to any official as doing so may make them angry and that can harm our career”, said a doctor on condition of anonymity.
The doctors expressed fear that if unhygienic conditions continued diseases may break out in the hostel.
