Simple marriage

I
Sir,
This has reference to the news item, “Expenses, guest list tab on wedding from April 1” DE Feb 22.
The decision of the Government to keep a check on lavish weddings and exuberant celebrations is more than welcome. The State Government has rightly noticed that there is wastage of food items during these weddings. It has been witnessed that  with each passing day there are new food items on menu cards. These are not mere expensive but pose a threat to health as no hygienic standards are maintained during their preparations, though display is quite attractive. The increasing number of food items, and drink parties is nothing but mere display of wealth power. This creates the border between have and haven’ts. Today celebrating a wedding has become an expensive affair. The Janjghars, banquet halls charge a hefty sum from wedding parties. Everybody can’t afford them but social customs or practices land them there. In case a person fails to have the services of a Janjghar, he is socially ostracized or looked down upon.
Now, when Government has decided to bring wedding under an act, it is necessary that laws so framed are implemented in letter and spirit.
It may be mentioned here that it is for the second time that PDP headed Government in the State has issued the guest control order. In 2003, PDP-Congress Government restricted the number of guests in marriages to 150. The order was challenged by Jammu and Kashmir Banquet Hall Association and it was struck down by the court. It is expected that the Government may have taken this into consideration before framing the new law.

Sir,
Those political leaders who raise hue and cry over a slight seasonal increase in the prices of onions and potatoes terming it as resulting in sufferings of the middle income earning groups should oppose the  Government’s move to regulate the expenses on marriage ceremonies. It may be recalled that a guest control Act too was in operation in the state in the years 1975-76 but due to  non cooperation by the people itself and the corrupt practices adopted by some of the regulatory staff , the  guest control and platter control  measures became a laughing stock.
Why should there be unnecessary spending and show biz activities to create bad taste for those who cannot afford to run in this marathon of false hood and sheer wastages. It is a right move in the right direction by the government right from printing of  invitation cards to the number of dishes etc. The most commendable measure is about not allowing irritating and pollution creating noisy high pitched DJ music systems.People cannot sleep and rest in those areas where such DJ music is played during nights .
The authorities should implement with seriousness these measures from April this year .
Yours etc….
