SRINAGAR, Mar 25: A shutdown was observed by the shopkeepers of Pampore Town in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district today against the alleged lackadaisical approach of local administration in granting flood relief cheques.
President of Traders’ Federation Pampore, Abdul Majeed, said the local administration is clearly flaunting the Governor’s order wherein he had said that all the traders should be granted flood relief within one week. “They are lazy. In eighteen days they have given relief cheques to only 600 shopkeepers and more than 1400 are still pending. They are saying there are no available funds now,” he said.
Majeed said they submitted a memorandum to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir in this regard. “We will wait for another two days as Divisional Commissioner assured us of release of flood relief,” he said, adding that if further delay is caused by administration then they will go for an indefinite strike.
Tehsildar Pampore, Muhammad Maqbool when contacted said they have a liability of Rs. 5 crores and the process of relief distribution is yet to conclude. “So far we have just distributed checks worth Rs. 1.65 lakhs and the rest are pending. We have sent a detailed report to the Divisional commissioner and he has assured us that the funds shall be released with two days,” he told Excelsior.
