Shutdown affects life in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 2: Life across Kashmir valley was paralyzed due to a shutdown called by separatists against the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Udhampur where he inaugurated Chennani-Nashri tunnel today.
Most of the shops and commercial establishments were closed in summer capital Srinagar here while educational institutes, Government offices and banks were closed on the account of Sunday. The public transport was largely hit due to shutdown call but private transport remained unaffected.
In the wake of yesterday’s militant attack on Army and violence in the city, authorities stepped up security across the city and deployed additional contingents of security forces men in both civil lines and old city areas. The security was also beefed up on the entry and exit points of the city.
Although the day passed off peacefully, incidents of stone-pelting between youth and security forces occurred at Eidgah, HMT and Nowgam areas of the city. Police fired some teargas shells to disperse the protesters. The reports of shutdown were also received from other parts of the Valley but overall the day passed off peacefully.
