Shut down in Pulwama, Kulgam

SRINAGAR, Aug 25: Pulwama and Kulgam townships of South Kashmir today observed a complete shut down amidst clashes between police and protesters in which 6 persons were injured.
In Pulwama, the shutdown was observed against the alleged molestation bid by a policeman. While as the Kulgam observed shutdown against the detention of youth.
During the shutdown at both the towns, protesters and police clashed resulting in injuries to 6 persons, five in Kulgam and one in Pulwama. The authorities had made elaborate security arrangements to contain escalation of protests.
A policeman was suspended and arrested in Pulwama after he allegedly tried to molest a girl in Main Town. The incident triggered protests by locals and local traders had called for shutdown today. The police today, however, held a meet with the members of trade community as well as local Auqaf and assured them of prompt action in the incident. Following the assurance, the strike was called off and the routine activities are expected to resume from tomorrow.
Kulgam Town has been continuously shut since last four days and today was the fifth day of the shutdown. The locals are demanding release of detained persons and an end to raids by police’s Special Operation Group.
