JAMMU, Apr 20: Irked over alleged unrestrained behavior of IGP Traffic Basant Rath, shopkeepers and locals of Old Janipur held a protest demonstration, here today.
Shouting slogans against the officer, the protesting people also blocked the ever busy Janipur road for some time and registered their strong resentment against alleged excesses of the Traffic Police during its anti-encroachment drive in the area.
The trouble erupted when the team of officials, accompanying IGP Basant Rath,  forcibly took away a stationery shop’s counter, in which cash and    bill books were kept. The shopkeeper claimed that the counter was placed inside the shop.

Similarly, the team of IGP also damaged an earthen oven (Tandoor) after entering inside a dhabha on the High Court road.
Accusing the officials of resorting to ‘excesses’ and making vulgar signs, some locals and shopkeepers took to street and held a protest demonstration. They appealed the Government to restrain the officer from his unrestrained behaviour and take action against him.
The protest demonstration was led by president of the Old Janipur Shopkeepers Association, Yashpal Mantoo, who warned that un-necessary harassment of the shopkeepers would not be allowed.
