AKHNOOR, Dec 19: Shiv Sena J&K unit has demanded development of tourist and historical sites of Akhnoor and bringing them on tourist map of J&K.
The demand was vociferously raised during a programme organized by Shiv Sena’s J&K Unit while constituting its Chowki Chaura Unit here today.
Shiv Sena J&K president, Manish Sahni announced Sham Lal Sharma as president of Chowki Chaura Unit.
Addressing the gathering Sahni said that Akhnoor has not been accorded due recognition and status despite its historical importance and rich tourism potential.
He said that it was here on the bank of River Chenab at Jiya Pota that Sher-e-Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh crowned Gulab Singh as Maharaja of J&K on June 17, 1822 thus laying the foundation of Dogra Rule.
“Revered Gurudwara Sahib situated on the bank of Chenab River is a centre of attraction for everyone in Akhnoor besides historical places like Pandav Caves, Kufi Devasthan, Sumah Devta, Ambaran, Kai Devta Ragani, Nad Devasthan, Baba Sunder Singh Taposthan, Balle De Bagh and Bagh Pir Baba Ziarat Sthan etc,” the Shiv Sena leader maintained.
He claimed that development of these sites would attract tourists to this region thereby boosting its economy.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Shiv Sena, general secretary; Vikas Bakshi, vice president; Balwant Singh, Prabhari; Ashwani Prabhakr and Rakesh Handa.
