JAMMU, May 9: Shankracharya Jayanti was celebrated today across the State with religious fervour and gaiety.
A grand celebration was held at Shankracharya temple, Srinagar in Kashmir Valley in which hundreds of devotees drawn from various parts of the country took part.
Advisors to Governor, K. Skandan and Kewal Kumar Sharma also attended the Hawan celebrations., Besides, Chief Secretary, B V R Subrahmanyam, Save Sharda Committee Kashmir led by its head Ravinder Pandita also participated in the week long celebrations that concluded with Jayanti today.
Every year people from throughout the country visit Srinagar on Shankrajayanti with a mission, it is to pray for peace and communal harmony. Shankrajayanti is the birthday of Adi Guru Shankracharya who is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva and was the pioneer of Advaita philosophy. He was born in Kerala over 1300 years back.
The Adhi Guru travelled thousands of kms from Kerala to Kashmir to do meditation at Shankaracharya hill Srinagar to spread the message of peace to humanity.

Today on May 9 Shankarajayanti hundreds of people came to pray for the peace and communal harmony and paid obeisance to Adi Guru Shankracharya who meditated here.
Swami Vishwathmananda Sarsswati from Sunderbani Ashram came along with hundreds of his followers and performed Abhishek for world peace. Several Purohits came from Kanchi Mutt, Tamil Nadu and performed Yagna for peace in the country.
Ramakrishna Mission, Srinagar installed book stall on the teachings of Rama Krishna Paramahamsa to spread his message of universal brotherhood. Several displaced Kashmiri Pandits led by Ravinder Pandita also came to pray for their peaceful return to the Valley and also prayed for the opening of Sharada Peeth in PoK. The program was organised by local business man Vidhu Sharma who is staunch devotee of Shankracharya. Program was given wide publicity with the coordination of Sant Samaj and national leaders by team “One India Strong India” led by  Bellur Laxminarayana and Paneendra Kumar  from Bangalore who are driving this mission from past six years. Shankracharya hill temple is among the ancient Shiva temples in India. Shankracharya hill is very sacred hill where many saints have meditated in the past.
Shankrajayanti was also celebrated by the devotees of Adhi Guru at Dream City Muthi where a Rudhra Abhishekh and Rudra Homa was performed on the lines of Shengeri Sharda Peeth under the guidance of competent Vedachariyas.
A large number of devotees drawn from different parts of Jammu participated in the function and paid obeisance to Adhi Guru who revived the Sanatan Dharam and spread the message of universal brotherhood and peace which is the basis of Hindu philosophy. The devotees were served with prashad after Puranahuti.
The function was organised by I K Raina a staunch devotee of Adhi Guru Shankracharya.
The Shankrajayanti was also celebrated at other parts of Jammu region where homas and havans were performed by the Sadhus and devotees of the Adhi Guru for spreading the message of Sanatan Dharma.
Adhi Guru Shankracharya was 8th century Indian theologian, who consolidated the doctrine of Adhivaita -Vaidata. He is credited with unifying and establishing main currents of thought in Hinduism.
He attained Nirvana in 820 Ad at Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.
