Srinagar Apr 2: Amid a ban on mining in Jammu and Kashmir, several road projects are held up for the want of construction material in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, with administration claiming material for pending projects would be made available in the next few days.
The shortage of material has especially affected the construction work of several important roads that are being implemented by the Road and Buildings Department.
“On one hand the Government wants us to complete the projects on stipulated time but on the other they ban mining. The absence of raw material has stalled all the projects in the district,” an official said.
The lack of raw material has affected work on several road projects that are being implemented under the Central Road Fund to improve the connectivity of the district. The construction work of roads including Ravishhpora-Pazalpora, Sopore -Shiva, and Sopore- Arahpora has come to a halt.
The roads including Lassersaversana-Sheikhpor, Fruit Mandi-Warpora, and Watlab-Chatkoet that are being built under PMGSY has been equally hit.
People told Excelsior that they have been waiting for the completion of these roads as it would have enhanced the connectivity of the entire district. “It is a shame that the roads which were allocated after pursuing government for a long time are not being completed. We want authorities to make material available for the projects so that people get benefitted,” he said.
ADC Baramulla, Mohammad Ahsan Mir, told Excelsior that they have taken up the matter with Geology and Mining Department and the material will be made available in a few days.
“We are exploring a possibility to allow the executive agencies to lift the loose material from the quarry units so that the pending works are enacted. The executive agencies will be only allowed to lift the loose material and no fresh mining will be permitted,” he said.
