Srinagar, July 31: A separatist leader in Srinagar escaped bid on his life this evening while a woman was killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan in Gurez sector and an encounter between militants and security forces was going on in Shopian area of South Kashmir.
Shakeel Bakhshi, a senior separatist leader and founder of Islamic Students League this evening escaped bid on life after unknown persons fired upon him inside his residence at Bemina area of Srinagar.

The gun man fled from the spot and there were few bullet marks on stair and ceiling. The separatist leader fell during the attack and injured his hand.
A police party immediately reached the spot and took stock of the situation. They are investigating the incident.
And a woman died while as a Health official suffered injuries after India and Pakistani troops exchanged shelling in Gurez sector of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district last evening.
A woman identified as Rahimi Begum, 35, wife of Abdul Ahad Bhat and the employee of Health Department Manzoor Ahmad Malik were injured after a shell landed in the residential area of Bagtore in Gurez late last evening.
Both the injured were immediately taken to nearby hospital from where Rahimi was referred to SMHS Srinagar in critical condition. However, the woman later succumbed to injuries at around 2 a.m.
India and Pakistan troops today exchange fresh shelling along LoC in Uri sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Sources said that Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire from across the border in Hajipeer area of Border town Uri this evening. He said that the soldiers manning the fence also responded the fire strongly. However, there was no immediate report of any casualty. The exchange of fire between the two sides was going on.
India and Pakistan troops yesterday traded shelling along Line of Control (LoC) in Mohra sector of Uri, Tanghdar, Keran, Jumgund and Gurez sectors.
Security forces today busted a militant hideout in Sogam area of Kupwara and recovered ammunition. A joint team of Army’s 28RR,162 Batallion of CRPF and Kupwara Police conducted searches in the forest area of Sogam Kupwara after inputs about a militant hideout.
The troops busted the hideout and recovered 3 AK-47 magazines, 48 rounds AK-47 ammunition, 3 ATR grenades, 3 HC, SC 860/grenades and one green pouch.
Security forces had a brief exchange of fire after they cordoned off orchards in Baderhama area of Shopian this evening. The security forces cordoned off the entire orchard area and the village after militants escaped from the spot.
The troops suspected that the militants are still present inside the cordon. They have put operation on hold and have lit the area to prevent them from fleeing the area. Troops had reports of presence of 3 militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad hiding in the orchard area including two foreigners.
Meanwhile, Army’s 53 RR,23 Para and 44 RR launched a massive cordon and search operation in Yarwan forest area falling under the districts of Budgam, Pulwama and Shopian. The operation was launched after reports of militants’ presence in the area.
