Srinagar, Feb 19: As the schools are set to re-open on February 24 after remaining closed for the winter vacations, it might not be possible for the students living in far flung areas of Gurez to make to their schools on the said date.
Owing to the snow that has accumulated over the period of time, the parents from Gurez and other adjoining areas are demanding further delay in the re-opening of the schools.
As the snow continues to remain accumulated around the schools in the area which receives considerable snowfall annually, the parents said that it will be difficult for the students to go to their respective schools which are situated at a distance of at least 10 kilometres from the villages they reside in.
“At present, at least 6 feet of snow remain accumulated in the area including the schools; it will be really difficult for the kids to reach the schools,” Sajad Ahmad, a parent told Excelsior over phone.
Earlier, during an avalanche that hit the area, three students came under it. While two students were rescued, one continues to remain missing.
“We live in avalanche prone area and it will be very dangerous if the kids will be out for schools and I don’t think that it will be possible for us to send our children to schools on February 24,” he added.
“The administration has to understand that we live in a tough terrain; prone to avalanches, plus, there is no substantial heating arrangements in the schools, which will in turn make it difficult for the students to focus on their studies, “ another parent, Abdul Aziz said,
He added that it will be better if the Government will extend the vacation here as was done for Ladakh.
