POONCH, July 10: While offering to resign en-mass, Sarpanchs and Panchs from three blocks of Poonch today held protest demonstration in support of their demands, giving one month ultimatum to the State Government.
The members from various Panchayats of these three major blocks including Poonch, Surankote and Mandi, under the leadership of Pir Nissar and Abdul Ghani assembled at Fawara Chowk, Poonch town at around 10 am today. Then they moved inside the nearby Park and sat on day- long dharna.
These Sarpanchs and Panchs shouted slogans against the Government and also in support of their demand of granting full powers to the Panchayats. They also raised slogans against the Government and Minister concerned. Several Sarpanchs also addressed the gathering and alleged that they are not taken into confidence by the BDOs and their staff while approving works in their respective area. They claimed that will not allow this to happen. They demanded that as per Government’s commitment, the Panchayats be given powers at the earliest.
These nearly 300 agitating Sarpanchs/ Panchs offered to resign en-mass and gave one month’s ultimatum to the Government if their demand is not addressed. These Panchayat members also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Poonch, addressed to the State Chief Minister, projecting their main demand. They demanded that all the works in their respective Panchyats be conceived and approved with their consent and taking them into confidence as they were elected public representatives. They said in the democratic set up Panchayats are the smallest administrative units and these should be allowed to flourish properly. The Government should fulfill its commitment, they demanded.
