Sir,
The death of Sarabjit Singh who was savagely attacked by the fellow prisoners in the Kot Lokpat Jail, Lahore appears to be the outcome of a well planned conspiracy hatched with the active connivance of the Pakistan Government is evidenced by the fact that no action has been taken against the jail authorities till to date. The matter is to be looked beyond issues of diplomacy and politics and can be thus articulated in simple terms as that a man has met a brutal end and the affair should never have ended so horribly. It is also another unfortunate blow to the already wafer-thin interaction between the two conflicted neighbours. It now requires appropriate responses from the two governments to ensure that no knee jerk reactions upend the fragile normalisation process.
This is not the first case of an Indian inmate being badly manhandled in jail. Earlier the Pakistan authorities did the same with Captain Kalia and Chamel Singh. They acted most savagely while mutilating the bodies of our two army jawans on the border. There are many other instances on record as well. They should remember that we dealt with honourably with 95,000 of their officers and men whom we carried as Prisoners of war in 1971-the greatest surrender of all wars history has known. The attack needs to be investigated and all those responsible for it must be identified. It is also important that we investigate why he was not granted better security.
A definitive statement after a thorough investigation by the Pakistani authorities is imperative, which would be a testimonial of the State to its rejection of any act that goes against its constitutional, legal, ethical, social and diplomatic code of conduct. The entire incident is layered in very suspicious circumstances, and it is the duty of the Government to make the report public. This has also been suggested by the lawyer of Sarabjit Singh Awis Sheikh.
Yours etc…
