NEW DELHI, Nov 12:
While admitting that there may be imponderables surrounding relations with Pakistan, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said there were positive signals too, including a realization of the fruitlessness of extremist ideologies, that gave hope.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here, Mr Khurshid said at the moment there were many imponderables that injected an element of uncertainty.
He said there were going to be elections in the region and one did not know what combinations would emerge after that.
Mr Khurshid, however, said there are many, many signals, which were optimistic.
In his view, “there was now a sense of exhaustion in many societies that flirted with extremism of various kinds and people were really exhausted because it’s becoming so apparent that it’s not achieving anything for anybody”.
Therefore, he said, “there is some hope we can build on”.
He said signals coming from Pakistan had indicated that the peace constituency was growing, and that was the important thing, but the question was whether it had reached the critical mass that was needed.
“I think we should be very careful about making that assessment,” he added. (UNI)
