Safina Baig favours political reservation for women

JAMMU, July 24: Prominent  legal luminary and woman leader Safina Baig  today stressed the need to provide political reservation to the women  and said that they should be provided more opportunities in all the fields.
Addressing  women students from  Pahari and Gujjar community here today at a program organized by Waffa Foundation, Ms Safina  said  that students should participate in debates and discussions in the public forum and try to engage public as well which would not only develop  but also help in generating a popular opinion of the people . She said that  politics is concerned about the state affairs, constitution,  national and international issues including important routine issues and involvement of students  will encourage them to develop keen interest among them.
She said,  “ If we forbid students from politics then we cannot produce good political leaders which will create shortage of  political leaders and no one will care our community and citizens, “  she said and added that there is need to create  political consciousness among the students.
Stressing the need for women political empowerment  in the country,  Safina said that although our constitution has removed gender and caste  inequalities, yet  discrimination continues to be a vast barrier for women political participation. And most of the discriminatory attitudes towards this lot has manifested limitations of low access to information and resources including running political offices and literacy and work burden within the household. There is a little space for them as men have dominated the political arena for many years in the country as a result political participation of women is not impressive in India as compared to neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh etc.
She said while as Article 73 and 74 of Panchayati Raj Act has granted more  reservation to women but it needs to be extended to Parliament as well for which women have been demanding since long.  She demanded a legislation on the issue.
