POONCH, Dec 17: Former MLC, Dr Shehnaz Ganai has said that people from rural areas are suffering badly for want of adequate infrastructure and facilities and it is the responsibility of the Government to provide the same.
While interacting with people from Loran area today, Dr Ganai said that over the years we have seen that on poverty front our villages top the table, this is because of the fact that no sincere efforts have been made to enhance the rural infrastructure. Dr Ganai said that rural poverty is a product of poor infrastructure that hinders development and mobility. Rural areas lack sufficient road networks, that increases access to agricultural inputs and markets. Without roads, the rural poor are cut off from technological development, she said.
Former Legislator further said that poor and non-existent irrigation systems threaten the agricultural yields because of uncertainty in the supply of water for crop production. Many rural areas lack irrigation network, resulting in fewer crops, fewer days of employment and less productivity, she added.
On the issue of wildlife sanctuary which has been established in upper reaches of Loran block in Poonch, Dr Ganai said that there are a few villages which are thickly populated and these residential areas have been included in the wildlife sanctuary. She today up the matter with the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Suresh Chug, to consider the demand of the public for redrawing of boundaries of the wildlife sanctuary, so that the poor residents are not forced to migrate from the area.
Dr Ganai appealed the Government to ensure that funds flow to the ground and the last man in the queue gets benefited by it. The need of the hour is to converge the developmental activities under a single line in the rural and far-flung areas, so that at local level the monitoring can be done effectively. She said key to economic development of the area lies in the road network as it gives boost to the economic development of the area. District Poonch being the border and the remotest part of the State has seen less investment over the years in infrastructure like electricity, roads, water systems and telecommunications, and thus needs immediate attention,” Ganai said.
