Modern education revolves around the teachers and pupils. No doubt activity based education or principle of learning by doing is now-a-days stressed in our day to day teaching-learning process especially up to secondary level education. But our teachers still enjoy a pivotal position in our instructional process. ‘What’ is to be taught depends upon ‘how is to be taught’. And it is the teacher who is considered as architect of future generation. “The destiny of India is shaped in her classrooms” was rightly stated by the Education Commission in 1996. So the future of a developing nation like India largely depends upon the quality of teacher.
A knowledgeable and enlightened teacher is an asset and is looked upon with great reverence. Such a teacher’s action is highly appreciated. His valuable opinions and stance is sought in every matter. It is unfortunate that many teachers do not take their profession seriously. They consider it only as a means of their bread and butter. They do not bother to acquire upto date knowledge, latest teaching skills and modern techniques and adopts innovative teaching methods. As a psychologist, he must have the techniques to motivate the students psychologically. You can take horse to the water but you cannot force him to drink.
Similarly it largely depends upon skillful teachers as how to motivate the students for day’s learning. A tactful teacher with just simple smile on his/her lips can motivate whole of the class for introduction to any new concept. One has to pay the price for success. The price is hard work, dedication and commitment to the cause. A skillful teacher helps students develop the spirit of enquiry among students so that they should not remain passive listeners. Our teachers must understand the new challenges and accept their legitimate responsibilities towards students, parents, society, community and nation as a whole, otherwise the standard of education will further deteriorate.
