NEW DELHI:   Congress senior leader and member of the state Assembly Rita Bahuguna Joshi today resigned from the membership of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, as well as the party.

Ms Joshi has sent her resignation to Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey by post and on email to the Assembly secretariat.

Ms Bahuguna also resigned from the primary membership of the Congress. She represents Lucknow Cantonment segment in the Assembly.

The ex-Congress leader, however, said she will present her resignation in person before the Speaker when she comes to Lucknow later this week.       Ms Bahuguna, a retired professor of Allahabad University, joined the BJP in presence of party president Amit Shah.

She said the breaking point came over Indian Army’s surgical strikes and the way party’s state poll campaign was being handled.

Addressing mediapersons, the former Congress leader hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking courageous steps for national security as exemplified by Army’s cross LoC surgical strikes against terrorists.

In a dig at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Ms Bahuguna said she has been greatly pained by the way the Congress questioned the army’s operation and accused the Modi government of ”Khoon ki Dalali” on the issue. (AGENCIES)
