Respite for Valley from cold after light rains, snow

Srinagar, Dec 22: Kashmir valley had respite today from extreme cold as night temperature after plummeting to minus 5.6 degree Celsius rose by over six notes and settled above freezing point for the first time in last 10 days.
Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley received light rains this evening while the hills had light snowfall and icy winds were blowing across Valley.
The temperature in Srinagar increased by nearly six degrees from the previous night’s minimum temperature of minus 5.6 degree Celsius and settled at 0.1 degree Celsius. The day temperature settled at 9.5 degree Celsius.
The night temperature remained above the freezing point for the first time in the last 10 days in the city, which experienced the coldest night of the season yesterday. The fringes of the Dal lake that were frozen for last few days were no longer frozen this morning.
The minimum temperature also increased by over five degrees in Pahalgam in South Kashmir, as the mercury there settled at a low of minus 2.1 degree Celsius compared to the previous night at minus 7.2 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature of Pahalgam settled at 4.3 degree Celsius.
The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg recorded minus 10.0 degree Celsius and the maximum day temperature settled at 0.0 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Kupwara in North Kashmir went up by over four degrees from the previous night’s minus 4.5 degree Celsius to settle at zero degree Celsius. The maximum temperature of Kupwara settled at 6.9 degree Celsius.
Kokernag town in South Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature of minus 1.5 degree Celsius, while Qazigund settled at a low of minus 2.2 degree Celsius. The day temperature of Kokernag settled at 6.4 degree Celsius and that of Qazigund settled at 9.5 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Leh increased by nearly five degrees from the previous minus 15.1 degree Celsius to settle at a low of minus 10.2 degree Celsius. However, Leh was recorded as the coldest place in the State. The day temperature settled at 2.8 degree Celsius.
The temperature in Kargil town also increased by over four degree as the mercury recorded a low of minus 10.0 degree Celsius. The day temperature settled at 0.4 degree Celsius.
The MeT office has forecast light rains and snowfall in Kashmir valley with maximum and minimum temperatures to settle at 6 degree Celsius and Zero degree Celsius respectively.
As the cold intensifies in Kashmir in Chillai Kalan, Kashmir valley was hit by frequent power cuts since last three days. The metered areas where there is 3-4 hour daily power cuts, the Power Development Department (PDD) has resorted to more unscheduled cuts.
The non-metered areas where the power cut is between 8-10 hours daily area also witnessed more power cuts.
