Reservation for disabled

Sir,
Apropos news item that appeared in the Daily Excelsior of 28th June, 2019 with the heading “VCT demands reservation for differently abled persons” the Viklang Chhatra Trust has rightly raised the most genuine and appropriate issue of giving reservation to differently-abled persons of our society. There is no denying the fact that differently-abled persons have remained the most neglected section of the society in spite of various schemes of the government rolled from time to time for giving differently-abled persons benefits in education, sports, employment in government jobs which has given them opportunities to lead an independent and respectable life in the society. The Government has opened vistas of opportunities for them to help them express various talents in them making them shed the title of less-fortunate to fortunate. But there are limitless problems of these people which are neither tabled nor brought to fore and discussed at any forum or those are only discussed, but never resolved. The Viklang Chhatra Trust has touched the right nerve by raising the issue of giving differently-abled persons due reservation in the lawmaking forum like State Assembly as well as Parliament for tabling and thrashing out their genuine problems taking them to the logical end ensuring justice delivery to this most neglected class of the society. It is pertinent to emphasize that the problems of differently-abled persons are understood and can be tabled by none other than the victims of nature themselves. There are examples of differently-abled persons of our society who by dint of hard work and the injustice meted out to them by the nature itself, became educated and have risen to occupy respectable places in the society like a doctor, teacher, artist and to various other respectable positions. But they have always been denied their actual position and have been kept away from justifiable benefits. The leaders of various political parties have always made hollow slogans for the betterment of differently-abled persons only to get votes in elections, but their miseries have not alleviated and their lot has not improved to a level envisaged or promised in election manifestos. Consequently, they have still remained deprived and underprivileged. They are unorganized and resource-poor and, though capable, yet cannot dream of becoming part of the law-making forum of the government since they cannot think of jumping in election fray for many reasons need not to be explained here for obvious substance and genuineness of everyone’s comprehension. Therefore, if the State Government is really interested for improving their plight, it should come forward and give reservation to this most under-privileged section of the society. The State Government should nominate at least one differently-abled educated person of eminence from across the society as Member of Legislative Assembly as well as one Member of Legislative Council under the provisions of nominations of eminent person from across the society if we really mean business to improve their lot in the society. If we really mean to alleviate the miseries of this most under-privileged section of the society, providing nomination of the differently-abled persons in the State Assembly and Legislative Council will be the real and most humanistic act of justice delivery by the Government to the most under-privileged lot of our society. Let the Government rise to the occasion and do justice to this most neglected section of our society for giving equity and fair play to this class.
