JAMMU/KATHUA, May 26: Jammu Municipal Workers Union here today staged a protest demonstration under the leadership of their president, Rinku Gill.
The protesters raised slogans in favour of their demands.
Talking to reporters Gill demanded that Safaikaramcharis should be recruited directly as permanent or daily wagers and the NGO system for their recruitment should be abolished.
He also said that minimum wages for all the workers including skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled, working under JMC should be increased.
Gill further demanded that all the SRO-43 cases should be settled, all the Safaikaramcharis who have completed their seven years of service should be regularised and the ex-gratia given to the family members of Safaikaramcharis at the time of their death should be increased to Rs. 1 lakh.
Other demands of the protesting municipal workers were regularisation of colonies of Safaikaramcharis and allotting them new colonies, holding of DPC, 2.5 day salary to the field staff including supervisor, Mashki, drivers, Safaikaramcharis and others.
The demand of providing uniforms to Safaikaramcharis was also raised during the protest.
Meanwhile, members of the Safaikaramcharis Union Kathua have intensified their protest and launched an indefinite strike.
They also raised similar demands like regularization of daily wagers who have completed more than seven years of service.
District president of the Union, Shaka Subh stated that sanitation workers have been continuously struggling for their rights for more than eight years but their demands still remain unfulfilled despite repeated assurances from the authorities.
The vice president of the Union, William, former president, Somraj and chairman, Darshan Kumar also addressed the protesters.
Several daily wagers including Satya Devi, Polly, Parveen, Deepak, Bunty, Shubam and others were also present in the protest.
