‘Rechristen Srinagar Airport after Major Somnath’

JAMMU, Jan 31: Shri Kailakh Jyotish Avim Vedic Sansthan Trust here today organized a programme at Raipur Domana and paid tributes to the 1st Param Vir Chakra Awardee, Major Somnath Sharma on his 98th birth anniversary.
The Trust members highlighted the role of Major Sharma who rendered supreme sacrifice while defending Srinagar Airport from the attack of Tribal invaders backed by Pakistani Army on November 3, 1947.
The Trust appealed J&K LG, Manoj Sinha to rechristen Srinagar Airport after Major Somnath Sharma and install his statue at a suitable place in Jammu.
Major Sharma was born on January 31, 1923 in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh in a Brahmin military family. The D-Company of 4 Kumaon led by Major Somnath Sharma was air lifted to Srinagar during tribal invasion on October 31, 1947 where he fought bravely till the last man and the last round.
Trust vice president, Vijay Seth; Suraj Singh Jamwal, Rahul Seth, Nittan Sharma, Davinder Singh, Vinod Sharma, Amit Sharma others were also present on the occasion.
