Randhawa demands OBC status for Jat community

JAMMU, Dec 11: Ch. Vikram Randhawa, Member Legislative Council (MLC) has demanded Other Backward Classes (OBC) status for the Jat community in Jammu and Kashmir.
A delegation of Yuva Jat Sangathan led by Ch. Vikram Randhawa today called upon Chairman Backward Commission, Jeet Lal Gupta and submitted a memorandum to him endorsing the demand of the entire Jat community for its inclusion in the OBC category.
While briefing the Chairman of the Backward Commission, Randhawa said that the Jats in Jammu and Kashmir are demanding OBC status since long and had made many representations at different levels in the past. He said that the community will now vigorously pursue this issue to get their demand settled.
Randhawa said that the Jat community in Jammu region has a good number of population and the majority is in farming occupation. He said that the population of Jats mostly resides along border areas and are worst affected by the shelling from across the border which forces them to migrate on and off, which affects the education of their children besides other things.
He said that the OBC status to the Jat community will provide an opportunity to the young generation to avail benefits of reservation to OBCs which will ultimately improve their living status.
Randhawa urged upon the Chairman of the Backward Commission to personally pursue the issue with the authorities and strongly recommend the case for the OBC status to the Jat biradari.
Others who accompanied Ch. Vikram Randhawa include councilors, Surjeet Choudhary and Dwarka Choudhary, Manjeet Singh, Parvinder Singh, Rampal Sandhu, Satinder Singh, Satish Choudhary.
