RAMBAN, Apr 26: A public meeting was held here today to deliberate on issues related to the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project and to safeguard the rights and interests of the people of the district.
The meeting witnessed participation from local residents, youth and members of civil society, who expressed serious concern over the reports suggesting a possible shift or diversion of project-related benefits away from Ramban.
The gathering unanimously resolved to strongly oppose any such move, asserting that the people of the district would not accept decisions that undermine their legitimate rights.
They emphasized that road connectivity and access to the project must remain through Ramban and that the district should continue as the primary stakeholder in all aspects of the project.
Speakers in the meeting demanded that Sawalkote project must remain centred in Ramban district, all weather road connectivity should be ensured through Ramban, compensation must be provided strictly in accordance with the Fair Compensation Act and employment opportunities arising from the project should give first preference to the local population.
To continue the movement in organized manner, Sawalkote Joint Action Committee (JAC) was constituted with Fairoz Khan as its president and Muzaffar Lone as legal advisor.
