Quota class not snatching share of others: TRCF

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, June 26: Pleading that the State Government and civil society should think optimistically towards the issues of ‘reservation’, the speaker in a programme today stated that the ‘quota’ granted to the reserved categories of J&K under ST/SC/ RBA/ALC/OSC is the share of communities proportionate to their population in the State services and not an aid at the cost of general category people.
Attended by dignitaries of various groups of reserve categories, the event was organised by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF) and presided over by Dr Javaid Rahi.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rahi stated that there is a dearth of positive mindset towards quota issue. He said the reservation granted to identified weaker sections, area and tribes in the State is based on the share of a community/ area or a caste proportionate to their population and reserve category people are not snatching the rights of others.
He said that the concept of reservation was based on share of a identified weaker class, caste, area or a tribe which fall under a category SC/ST/OBC and adequate representation is granted to them. This has been done to mitigate the backwardness of the socially and educationally backward communities.
The other speakers stated that as against 12.9 % Tribal population the Gujjars and Bakerwals are getting 10% quota in the State jobs which is below to their share but some anti-reservation groups are trying to snatch the same by creating confusion. They asked the youth to try their luck in private sector or outside the country, too.
The speakers said though the Gujjars-Bakerwals are historically oppressed and denied equal opportunity in society thus they remained un-represented in nation-building activities but now it’s a time to prove our-selves as a forceful and vibrant identity of India. They told that our younger generation should focus on new system of attaining knowledge through various resources including internet and new technology.
Those who spoke on the occasion included Dr S S Chouhan, Waris Mohd Banya, Shabnum Rafeeq, Ali Hussain Khatana, Bashir Bajad and Haneef Lodha.
