Punjab poll violence: Stone-pelting in Patiala’s Samana, police resort to cane charge

PATIALA, May 26: Police used batons to disperse supporters of two rival political parties who clashed with each other and pelted stones at cops at Samana during polling in Punjab civic elections on Tuesday, officials said.

Polling for 103 municipal bodies took place in Punjab on Tuesday.

According to the police, supporters of two rival political groups clashed and created a ruckus at a polling station in Ward number 19.

Amidst the chaos, a youth identified as Yakub, a resident of Ram Basti in Samana, attempted to flee. However, he got entangled in overhead power lines and suffered an electric shock.

He was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Samana, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

“Workers from both political parties resorted to stone-pelting. To bring the law and order situation under control and disperse the violent crowd, the police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge,” Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Vaibhav Chaudhary.

The senior official said that additional forces were deployed immediately, and the situation in the ward was brought under control “within minutes”.

Polling resumed peacefully thereafter under tight security. (PTI)
