Srinagar, Mar 22: Despite Governor’s recent decision to enhance ration scale, hundreds of residents today protested in Srinagar’s Soura and Batamaloo areas against the implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Scores of residents including women took to streets in Soura area and protested against NFSA implementation. The protesters raised slogans against State Government over NFSA implementation and sought its roll back.
There was a complete shutdown besides the protest in Soura. Protesters also clashed with security forces. They hurled stones and bricks on the security forces which resulted in complete halt of traffic in the area for an hour.
A similar protest also erupted in Batamaloo area of city centre against the ration scarcity and NFSA implementation. Witnesses said dozens of Batamaloo residents came out of their houses and staged anti-government protest.
The protesters said they were not given ration of the month of March and expressed their opposition to new scale under NFSA. They demanded roll back of the NFSA and urged concerned authorities to release the ration as per old scale.
Pertinently, the NFSA – by and large – has been strictly opposed in Kashmir Valley by people and dozens of protests have been held across the region against the Food Act. Not only opposition National Conference but even moderate separatist amalgam, Hurriyat Conference has also opposed the NFSA implementation and termed it anti-people.
