Protest demonstrations against power, water crisis continue

JAMMU, June 12: The protest demonstrations against the power and water scarcity continued in various parts of the city today with people taking to streets blocking road and torching the effigies of the Government.
BJP Mahila Morcha activists led by its president Priya Sethi held a demonstration outside PDD Office at Parade against unscheduled power cuts and water scarcity in Jammu.
Earlier the activists took out a procession from Purnai Mandi which after passing through different bazars reached Parade where a demonstration was held and the effigy of the Government was torched.
The protestors raising slogans against the Government demanded immediate steps be taken for bettering power and water supply in Jammu.
Priya Sethi in her address said that when Government is enforcing 8 to 10 hour power cuts in metered areas of Jammu what will be condition in rural areas?
Anu Dogra, Monika Khosla, Neeru Anand and others also addressed the gathering.
A protest demonstration was held at Barnai by the irate residents of Dharmal, Gurah, Barnai and adjoining areas. They also blocked the Barnai-Bantalab road in protest against the acute water and power crisis which the people of the area were facing for a long time now.
The protest was led by local leaders Mangat Ram Gupta and Ashwani Sharma. The protestors torched the effigies of the Government for its failure in maintaining proper water and power supply. The traffic on the road remained disrupted for some time. Later the dharna was lifted on the assurance of PHE and Police authorities who promised that immediate steps will be taken for bettering water and power supply.
A delegation of the people of the locality led by Mr Gupta also called on ADC Jammu and apprised him of the problem who took up the issue with concerned authorities of PDD and PHE also.
Meanwhile, a delegation of Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM) led by its president Sunil Dimple met Chief Engineer,  PHE Susheel Aima and apprised him about the problems being faced by the people due to shortage of drinking water in Jammu city.
Dimple expressed concern over the acute scarcity of drinking water and warned that no disruption in water supply will be tolerated in the ongoing Summer season when mercury has touched 45 degrees Celsius.
He urged the PHE Chief Engineer not to install water meters and withdraw the increased water tariff immediately and purchase more water tankers for the Jammu city.
Chief Engineer assured the delegation that their issues will be sorted out at the earliest.
Later, Dimple also met Shehnaz Goni, CE PDD and said the power cuts have made the life of the people miserable.
He demanded installation of fresh new receiving station of 50 MVA at Janipur to overcome the load problem and the curtailment of power cuts.
