NEW DELHI, May 29: Former Minister and BJP MLA, Priya Sethi has made it to the top 50 powerful women politicians of India.
She finds her name in a Hindi book titled ‘Bharatiya Rajneeti Ki 50 Shikhar Mahilayen’ authored by Dr Asshwine Shastri which was released by Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu here, today.
Speaking on the occasion, Venkaiah Naidu observed that all political parties had agreed for providing reservation to women in Parliament and State legislatures, and wondered why they were not moving forward on the issue. Stressing the need for adequate representation to the fair sex in Parliament and State legislatures, he said ‘the world over it has been recognized that representation of women in legislatures would help in resolving complex and sensitive socio-economic matters.’
He emphasized on the political and economic empowerment of women, saying that they should be given equal opportunities in all fields. Elaborating, he said economic empowerment of women was as important as their political empowerment and equal rights on parental property must be extended to women.
National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Vice Chairperson Anusuia Uikey, former Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister and MLA, Priya Sethi and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
Expressing concern over growing atrocities on women, he, however, was of the view that any atrocity should not be politicized. He also called for change of mindset among the people to prevent atrocities. `’It is not enough if we have a mere Bill,’ adding that ‘there should be political will and administrative skill to kill the evil”.
Noting that India had the tradition of respecting women from ancient times, he pointed out those women who had occupied positions of power in scriptures. A large number of women had played a key role during India’s Independence movement and in various fields in post-independent India — from sports to politics and economics.
Speaking on the occasion, Priya Sethi said she was humbled to find her name figuring in the book and said that this achievement is dedicated to all those women folk who have sacrificed their lives fighting for women’s rights. She said that it is the end result of women’s fight that today scores of schemes have been launched both by State as well as Central Government aimed at empowering women and giving them a dignified life.
