SRINAGAR, July 30: The degenerative disease not only results in pain but also in deformity, which is commonly seen in major joints like the knee and spine. As the prevention is better than cure, it is very important that all preventive measures are taken to prevent deformity in degenerative bone and joint diseases.
This was observed today in a meeting of Jammu and Kashmir Orthopaedic Association (JKOA) held today under the aegis of Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA). It was disclosed in the meeting that the IOA is going to organize week long activities starting from August 1, through out the country to raise awareness among people regarding ‘Prevention of Deformity in Degenerative Diseases’, which has been assigned as theme for ‘Bone and Joint Day’ this year by IOA president, Prof R C Meena, Head, Department of Orthopaedics, SMS Medical College, Jaipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Naseer Ahmed Mir, Prof & Head, Orthopaedics, SKIMS Medical College, Bemina Srinagar, said that we Indian people are facing more and more degenerative diseases as the average life expectancy of an Indian is 68.8 years.
He said they will be highlighting the importance of maintaining the ideal weight, doing regular exercises, taking a balanced diet with an adequate quantity of Vitamin D and calcium, improving muscle strength, maintaining good posture, lifestyle modification to prevent overuse and misuse of joints and spine, identifying mal-alignment of legs early and correcting them during the week-long activities.
