Presentation of Romeo Juliet

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Natrang Theatre Festival begins with ‘Romeo Juliet’ (DE, June 20, 2018).It is heartening to read that Four-day Natrang Theatre Festival organised to celebrate 35 years of Natrang organi zation commenced at Abhinav Theatre with the presentation of William Shakespeare’s famous play’Romeo and Juliet’, directed by Aarushi Thakur Rana.’Romeo and Juliet’, which is one of the the most popular and the most post frequently performed plays of William Shakespeare, is undoubtedly counted among the greatest romantic tales ever written. The play, set in the city of Verona, deals with the love story of two young star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet who are the children of two sworn  enemies. There are some passionate scenes in the play which finally ends in the death of the two lovers. It is after their deaths that their feuding families get reconciled. It is one among those plays which will never lose its popularity and the names ‘Romeo’ and ‘Juliet’ will continue to symbolise the two great and immortal lovers. This play has been adapted to many films including the Bollywood film’Ishqzaade’.The play has given us beautiful quotes such as’ Love is a smoke raised with the fumes of sighs’,’O, She doth teach the torches to burn bright’,’Don’t waste your love on somebody who doesn’t value it’,’What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’,’These violent delights have violent ends’ etc which are quoted in everyday language and which have enriched English language so much.
The fact that the young Director has rendered the play presenting Romeo and Juliet in a new avataar whilst maintaining the elementary themes makes the play all the more captivating and a feast to the eyes and the mind of the audience. The Director, the cast and others associated with the play deserve  a big applause for presenting  such a great classic on the Dogra soil.It is hoped that more plays of William Shakespeare will be presented in our state to expose the Jammuites to Shakesperean art, wit and profound thought.
