Pre-monsoon shower brings relief to people from scorching heat

JAMMU, July 4: The pre-monsoon shower brought a big relief for the people of Jammu as the rain during this afternoon in the winter capital city and others areas of the region, brought sharp fall in the temperature.
The heavy rain in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch and other parts of the region has resulted into nearly 5-6 degrees Celsius fall in temperature this evening. Due to rain power supply to Rajouri , Poonch and parts of Kathua has been snapped. In Jammu city localities as well power supply remained suspended for hours.
The Reasi-Mahore and Mahore-Chassana-Budhal road was blocked due to land slides and flood in a Nallah. The flash floods in several nallas also caused disruption in the smooth movement of vehicles on some roads in the region. The water logging in Jammu city and Kathua town on many roads and crossings due to blockade of drains caused inconvenience to the general public.
Director, Meteorological Department, J&K, Sonum Lotus said that Monsoons are late in J&K by a week. He said the downpour in Jammu region today was part of Monsoon rains but full fledged Monsoon is expected in next three days. He said there was light rain in some areas as well.
” If rains fulfill some criteria then we can say that it is Monsoon and we are examining that criteria and by tomorrow the IMD in J&K will be able to tell clearly about arrival of Monsoon in J&K. Within three days, Monsoon was expected to touch J&K. It is already late by at least one week. There will be cloudy day tomorrow and there may be light rain/ thunder shower in some parts of the region,” Lotus said.
Dr Mahinder, Senior Scientist at SKUAST -Jammu said it was pre-monsoon in Jammu today which brought about 6 degrees fall in temperature. He said monsoon is expected to arrive Jammu by next 2-3 days. It is already late by about one week in the State.
Meanwhile, a Met spokesman said that Jammu recorded a maximum 41.8 degree C and minimum 32.3 degree C temperature today. The evening turned pleasant in Jammu with the sharp fall in mercury. He said Holy township of Katra, Kathua, Udhampur and Bhaderwah towns have also experienced nearly 5-6 degree fall in temperature this evening.
The traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway plied smoothly despite light rain in Ramban belt by late this evening, however, chopper service from Katra base camp to Mata Vaishnodevi shrine helipad remained suspended due to bad weather.
