Polluted Tawi

Sir,
This refers to the editorial “Polluted Tawi” (October 1, 2015), which has assisted  the undersigned to recollect those remarkable days when I  used to go the river Tawi with a group of elders headed by Dr Moui Saran, R/o Mohalla Malhotra. It is the talk of 1952, when I was 4th class student, studying in Govt Primary School Mastgarh Jammu. Prominent members of this group belonging to Dhakki Sarajan, Mastgarh and Pir Mitha Mohallas, were Pt Tara Mani, Sarav Sh Bodh Raj, Dhani Ram, Parshotam and Bahu Ram. After Tawi we used to go to Pir Kho temple to worship the Lord Shiva. It is worthwile to mention that this was not the only group of people who used to go to every day to the river Tawi  for taking bath but a large numbers of other people both men and women from Pacci Dhakki, Dhounthli, Jullakha Mohalla and Dhakki Hazama also used to go to river Tawi for taking a bath or for a morning walk. This practice continued up to early 1980 which later on decreased or totally vanished probably due to increased water pollution of the river Tawi.
Another point which stands mentioned is the drinking of water from Tawi directly when water works system failed to supply water due to floods during rainy season to the city people. Glaring examples  are of the flooding years of 1950 and 1958, when many people brought water directly from the river  Tawi. In light of he above, the PDP and BJP Govt of J&K must ask the concerned authority to adopt certain policies to beautify the river Tawi as well as make suitable arrangements for disposal of organic wastes to make Tawi river free from pollution. Garbage management also needs to be well planned.
Yours etc…
