Srinagar, May 23: Police have recovered the device that was installed by militants on a mobile tower in Sopore and went missing early this month.
Sources said that police recovered an antenna and radio communication gadget that was installed by the militants on a mobile tower in Badami Bagh area of Sopore and went missing early this month.
The communication equipment was used to boost the radio communication of militants operating in Sopore area. Sources said that the device installed at the tower had been providing them wider coverage.
As it went missing from the tower early this month, militants approached the cellular operators in the town and threatened them of dire consequences in case they failed to return the equipment.
The militants barged into offices of three cellular companies in Sopore and threatened the staff for removing the communication device. They snatched mobile phone and laptop form the manager of a cellular company.
Police detained 4-5 persons to trace out the two militants who threatened the cellular companies’ staff. However, none of them was involved in threatening the staff. Police also questioned the staff of the cellular companies and showed the photographs of the detained persons.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir, Gareeb Dass when asked about the device installed on the mobile towers in Sopore said: “We have achieved breakthrough in it and recovered the equipment that was installed by the militants on a mobile tower. We are investigating who installed the device on the tower and what is its use. We have got some vital clues and we will crack this case soon.”
Giving details, he told reporters at Baramulla: “Few weeks back some armed men barged into the offices of some telecommunication companies and questioned them about the equipment which they had installed on a mobile tower. When we came to know about this issue, we registered an FIR and started investigations”.
“Some posters also appeared in North Kashmir in which the cellular operators were warned and the shopkeepers were asked not to recharge the cell phones. We registered an FIR in both the cases, one was in arms act and robbery and other in the unlawful activities act”, the DIG said.
