JAMMU, Feb 28: Police foiled the protest march and attempt to block the ever busy Tawi Bridge by protesting BSF and CISF aspirants, who were taken into preventive custody, here today.
Demanding job letters, the protesting youth tried to block Tawi Bridge when Police swung into action and whisked them away. A few protesters sustained minor injuries in the melee while one of them became semi unconscious.
The trouble erupted when a number of BSF and CISF aspirants assembled near the Press Club Jammu and started marching towards the Tawi bridge amid shouting of slogans in support of their demand. As the Police tried to stop them, some of the protesters staged a dharna on the road thus completely disrupting vehicular movement on the bridge.
Soon the cops swung into action and forcibly evicted the protesters, who were packed into Police vehicles and taken into preventive custody. The high voltage drama continued for more than half an hour before the normal traffic was restored.
Earlier, a number of BSF and CISF aspirants assembled near Press Club Jammu and held a strong protest demonstration. They were demanding job letters to those who had cleared final round of recruitment.
They claimed that the Government and BJP leaders had assured them to raise the number of posts of Constable in BSF and CISF but the final list of the selected candidates was rolled out for only 1,356 candidates instead of the assured added 2,000 posts.
The protesting aspirants, who had arrived from different areas particularly the rural belts, announced to carry on the agitation till their demand is fulfilled. The detained protesters were released later on.
