Police drops UAPA charges against 7 SKUAST students

Srinagar, Dec 2 : Seven students of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture, Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) were released on bail today after police dropped Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act charges against them.
The students were booked under UAPA for raising objectionable slogans following India’s defeat in the ICC world cup. They were granted bail after police dropped charges under UAPA against them.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate Ganderbal granted interim bail to all the 7 students who were booked for raising objectionable slogans. The bail was granted to the students after police dropped charges under section 13 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act-1967 against them on the basis of legal opinion.
“Senior prosecuting officer analysed circumstances evidences and statements on record opined that at this stage as per evidences on record does not connect under Section 13 UA (P) Act but the offence under Section 153-A IPC is attracted in the instant case while as Section 13 UA(P) Act is dropped,” read the report submitted by investigation officer (IO).
The counsel of the students advocate Shafiq Ahmad Bhat told Excelsior that the UAPA charges have been dropped against all seven students.
He said all the seven students were released after getting bail. The students are Umar Nazir, 25, son of Nazir Ahmad Dar of Umarhall Khanbal Anantnag, Asif Gulzar War, 23, son of Gulzar Ahmad War of Devpoar Magam Handwara, Syed Khalid Hussain Bukhari, 23, son of Syed Mohammad Qasim Bukhari of Kreeri Baramulla, Mohsin Farooq Wani, 25, son of Farooq Ahmad Wani of Sonarwani Bandipora, Sameer Rashid, 22, son of Abdul Rashid Mir of Waripora DH Pora, Kulgam, Tawkeer Ahmad Bhat, 21, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat of Watpora Bandipora and Ubaid Gulzar, 22, son of Gulzar Ahmad Wani of Tribjee Arwani Bijbehara in Anantnag district.
The judge has directed each of them to furnish a bail bond of Rs 25, 000. They have been asked not to indulge in anti-national activities or prevail upon the witnesses. They have been asked to cooperate with the investigation authority.
The IO has been asked not to call them before or after sunset and maintain proper record on the CD.
