Srinagar, Apr 30: In its sustained campaign against the drug menace, Police today destroyed illicit poppy cultivation across Kashmir.
Police today destroyed illicit poppy cultivation in Tangmarg and conducted an anti-drug awareness rally at Babareshi under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
Illegal cultivation at Khotipora and Sagribatpora was identified and destroyed, and samples were seized in the presence of a magistrate.
FIRs under the NDPS Act have been registered.
Police today destroyed illegal opium poppy cultivation in Anantnag, Sopore and Pulwama districts, registered three cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and arrested one accused, as part of the ongoing 100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan.
In Pulwama, police arrested Showkat Ahmad Shah, son of Ali Mohammad Shah, a resident of Monghama, after detecting poppy cultivation on his land. FIR No. 69/2026 was registered at Police Station Pulwama under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act.
The crop was destroyed on the spot in the presence of officials from the Excise, Agriculture and Revenue departments.
In Anantnag, Police Station Kokernag registered FIR No. 37/2025 under the same provisions following inputs about illegal cultivation at Narupora Chek village.
During a joint inspection involving police, an Executive Magistrate and Agriculture Department officials, authorities found opium poppy grown on about three marlas of land allegedly by Mohd Yousuf Naikoo, son-in-law of Ghulam Hassan Mir.
The crop was destroyed after completing legal formalities.
In Sopore, Police Station Bomai registered FIR No. 33/2026 after receiving information about poppy cultivation in Eddie Pora village.
A joint team comprising police, excise, agriculture, horticulture and revenue officials, along with the local Lumbardar, carried out a drive in the presence of the Executive Magistrate First Class, Zaingeer Bomai.
The crop was destroyed and samples were seized for analysis. Further investigation is underway.
