NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today compared Dalit icon Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar to American civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King. Saying it was a big mistake to label Babasaheb only as a messiah of the Dalits, the Prime Minister said, “He spoke up for all those who were oppressed, not only Dalits.” Dr Ambedkar fought for equal rights of women, the oppressed and tribals, he added. Speaking after laying foundation stone for the B R Ambedkar National Memorial in Delhi, Mr Modi said ”I have got an opportunity to fulfill Babasaheb’s dream. He left us in 1956. Today, after 60 years, a memorial is being set up.” (AGENCIES)
