NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today briefed on the Al Qaeda threat to spread terror in India even as security agencies issued an alert to several states named in the video.
Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri had announced earlier in video message that the global Islamist extremist movement had launched an offshoot in the Indian subcontinent. The BJP, reacting to the development, said the government was concerned and fully capable of handling any such situation. BJP spokesman Sambit Mahapatra said the government would act tough against any terror threat. The Congress said the development was ‘extremely worrying” and the government should take cognizance of the message.
Party spokesman Manish Tewari said the government should put pressure on Pakistan to expedite the case of those accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack as they (the accused) were roaming free.
Intelligence agencies said they would analyse the video to check its veracity.
In the video, Ayman said, “We want Islam to return to the Indian subcontinent, which was part of the Muslim world before it was invaded. It will serve Muslims in Burma, Kashmir, Gujarat, Bangladesh, Ahmedabad and Assam.” (AGENCIES)
