PHE workers stage protest against police, block road

POONCH, May 28:  The PHE workers from Mendhar Sub Division, today held protest demonstration against the local police authorities, for alleged manhandling of  their colleague by a police officer and his detention today.
Official sources said that Rakesh Kumar, an employee of the PHE Department placed in the  office complex of AEE PHE was on duty at water point to supervise filling up of water tankers. He was collecting revenue for the department against each water tanker.
On the public complaint of illegal collection, Rakesh was called to Police Station Mendhar and allegedly thrashed by a police officer, alleging that he was collecting money illegally. The employees told that on the direction of his officer (AEE and XEn ), he has been deputed to collect revenue and was issuing GR/ Receipt as well.
When the PHE workers came to know about the detention of the employee and his manhandling by police, they came out on the road at around 12 noon and started protest demonstration. The road remained blocked for about two hours. They shouted  slogans against SDPO, SHO and Mendhar Police.
The SDPO Riaz Tantray tried to pacify them after some time but they did not lift  dharna and threatened to suspend water supply to the area. Later, with the intervention of SDM Mendhar,  Dr Tanveer Khan and Naib Tehsildar TA Shah, the employees lifted dharna at around 2 pm. Rakesh was also released. The SDM assured to hold inquiry into the matter.
