Percentage of recovery in stolen property improves to 41% since 2018

Srinagar, Sept 23: In J&K, there are less than 50 per cent chances of recovery of stolen property as the Union Territory has recorded the recovery percentage of stolen property as just over 41 per cent for the year 2020, while the same has considerably improved since 2018.
As per figures that have been provided in the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) latest report, property worth 33.4 crore rupees was stolen in the year 2018, while the property worth 11.1 crore rupees has been recovered in the same year across J&K.
The recovery percentage for J&K in the year 2018, as per the NCRB report has been recorded as 33.3 per cent, indicating that out of 10 cases of theft the recovery was made only in 3 cases.
Further, as per the report, in the year 2019, property worth 30 crore rupees was stolen out of which only property worth 10.8 crore rupees was recovered. The recovery percentage in the year 2019 has been recorded as 35.9 only, indicating that out of 10 cases of theft the recovery was made only in 3 and a half cases across J&K.
As per the details that have been shared by the Union Territory, in the year 2020, property worth 30.3 crore rupees was stolen in different incidents of theft and burglary across J&K.
However, the report states that, during the year, only the property worth 12.7 crore rupees was recovered while the recovery percentage for 2020 was recorded as 41.9 suggesting that out of 10 cases of theft the recovery was made only in slightly over 4 cases.
With regard to the national percentage in terms of the recovery of stolen items, it has been recorded as 36.2 indicating that J&K is doing well in comparison to the national percentage in this regard.
In another section of the report which provides figures on recidivism—which is a habitual relapse into crime—J&K has recorded 2.2 per cent recidivism into the crime by the persons who were arrested in the year 2020.
As per the report, a total number of 33146 people were arrested in the UT under IPC out of which 191 juveniles were arrested for the first time. In the case of adults who were arrested, a total number of 32231 such persons were arrested, out of which 570 persons were those who were arrested but were not convicted in the past, while at the same time, there were 154 out of the total arrested who were arrested as well as convicted in the past.
