UDHAMPUR, May 13: Expressing strong resentment over no repair work on 60- year- old wooden bridge in Chenani area over river Tawi, locals of Pattangarh and adjoining villages held a strong protest demonstration against Public Works Department (PWD) and the District Administration Udhampur today.
The agitating people raised slogans against the PWD and District authorities for their failure to ensure safety of the people using this old bridge lying in dilapidated condition. They were demanding immediate repair of the partially damaged bridge.
This wooden bridge, constructed over Tawi by PWD way back about 1959, is the only link between Chenani to Pattangarh, Dhanas Gharian, Nagulta, Tandhar, Satyalta etc. It serves as link between about two dozen villages of 13 Panchayats with Udhampur district headquarters.
However, being partially damaged and lying in dilapidated condition, it poses serious threat to the safety of thousands of people of this area. For hundreds of students of Government Degree College and Women College at Udhampur, patients being rushed to SDH Chenani, District Hospital Udhampur from the area, for transportation of vegetables also and movement of general public, there is no other alternative. They have cross this damaged bridge.
But unfortunately, authorities never bothered about the repair or construction of new bridge at this place. They sought intervention of State Governor and Advisor into the matter.
