People protest as miscreants torch labourer’s house

MENDHAR, Nov 8: The people from Mankote area held strong protest against local police and blocked Mendhar-Poonch road for more the two hours today.
Irate villagers came out on the road after some miscreants locked the rooms of a poor labourer Mohd Azad at Barja village in Mankote from outside last night and set the house on fire. The family raised alarm and neighbours rescued them however, major portion of their house was burnt.
The villager Mohd Azad alleged that one local former Panchayat member Haji Abdul Khaliq was not paying his labour money worth Rs 11,400 since long. He had performed works under NREGA and Khaliq was refusing him money despite repeated requests. Khaliq threatened the poor family of dire consequences if he again approached him for money.
Upon this both Mohd Azad and his wife went to Police Station at Mendhar three days back and narrated the whole matter to police. They also met the SDPO and demanded action as they were getting life threats from Khaliq. But there was no action. Mohd Azad alleged that last night Abdul Khaliq and his sons set their house on fire and also abused them as they had reported the matter to police. The alleged that cops did not take action against them.
Agitated over the behavior of police, the locals of the area blocked road at Mankote and held protest demonstration against police from 9 to 11.30 am . On the intervention of Tehsildar Mendhar Shahzad Khan the people lifted dharna at round 11.30 and went to Mendhar. He talked to SDPO Shaid Nahim and SHO Dalip Singh and asked to take action in this regard. SDPO claimed that Abdul Khaliq has been detained and investigation has been started.
