PDP seeks protection for nomads of upper reaches

JAMMU, July 18: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sought full protection for the nomads in the upper reaches of Udhampur, Reasi, Kathua and Samba districts.
The party expressed serious concern over repeated attacks on the members of nomadic and Gujjar communities in mountainous Dudu Basantgarh area of Udhampur district creating panic among the minorities.
In a statement issued here today, the party spokesperson and former legislator Firdous Tak said that reports emerging from Ramnagar and Dudu Basantgarh area are not only distressing but also raise questions about the working of civil and police administration which are entrusted with maintaining law and order besides ensuring equality among all sections of the society.
He said police is said to have worked swiftly and arrested all the persons accused of murdering a girl in the area. “While the accused were arrested and put behind bars, some fringe elements under full protection of people at the helm of affairs have started attacking people belonging to nomadic community in Seoj Dhar and other adjoining pasture lands of Dudu Basantargh area”, he said.
Tak said that the local residents have apprised him about the current situation and expressed concern over the role played by the administration to put a curb on the trouble makers. “I have been told that hundreds of nomadic families are presently putting up in these pasture lands and are now being attacked and asked to vacate the area”, he added.
“Several deputations of aggrieved families have met the local officers and apprised them about the matter but it has been alleged that the miscreants are being fully protected by the system,” he said and sought immediate action against the trouble makers.
